“Shit, your sire really sucked,” Sara tells Mikael. It’s an understatement; she felt his mind, unpleasantly, and it was filled to the brim with disdain for anyone who handles the world even slightly different from him.

It kind of makes her want to take a shower.

“I know,” Mikael says. “I had believed so before, as well… but now, I know.”

And inside him, as he looks at her, there is a sense of confidence that wasn’t quite there before. A new sureness about the way he was already thinking about his life.

“This doesn’t make me feel great about trying to get the factions to chill,” she says. “If too many people are like him…”

“All you can do is your best, dear.”

Sara nods. “Will… you be okay if I go back to hang out with Kestrel? So we don’t draw too much unnecessary attention.”

Mikael smiles. “Certainly, my love—”

Just then, something beeps, echoing terribly through the room. It takes Sara a few seconds to realize that it’s the PA system.

“All guests must gather in the auditorium for a mandatory introductory panel discussion featuring each of our esteemed community leaders…”

Sara raises her eyebrows at Mikael. “I wonder if any of them are going to say a single thing even half-helpful?”

“Oh, I would doubt it.”

“I repeat, all guests must gather in the auditorium to hear the esteemed words of our esteemed….”

“Perhaps they should find a new word,” Mikael comments.

“Yeah, I don’t think the mayor’s very good at this.” Sara sighs. “Anyway, I’ll sit next to Kestrel or whatever… unless you think we can get away with all being in the same row for um, reasons? Maybe if we get in late so there’s fewer seats…”

Mikael smiles. “Dear, you are going to shake everyone’s world in mere hours. You need not worry too much now.”

Sara blushes… but it’s true.

She just really hopes she doesn’t fuck this up.

It’s easy enough to find everyone else when she can just think of them and find herself in their eyes. Okay, sure, the triangulation takes some effort, but less than trying to find a few vampire-needles in a vampire-haystack.

Aloysius smiles as she and Mikael walk close to them; fuck, he doesn’t know what just happened, and they’re probably not going to have a chance to tell him.

These are just the kinds of problems you have to handle when your city is descending into chaos, apparently.

She steers the three of them to Enji, then to Aria, Reminiscence, the crowd around them hardly taking notice as it attempts to filter through the too-narrow door.

The auditorium is large, but underwhelming. There’s no ornamentation on the walls; the light comes from boring, evenly-spaced fixtures, reporters and cameramen stationed along the blank walls. Clearly, no vampire had a hand in designing this. And sure enough, through one set of eyes and then another, Sara feels the emotional equivalent of groans from the crowd around her.

But they sit down anyway—resigned to dealing with this, one Orange Rose feels, but Sara can’t be sure that’s representative of everyone here.
